TIM STORY & DWIGHT ASHLEY UNITE WITH LEKTRONIC SOUNDSCAPES TO CREATE "DROP"

"Drop", the new work by Dwight Ashley and Tim Story, takes the listener on a journey from the absurd to the fantastic, exploring the dark beauty of horror, obsession and sublime ambiguity. Four years in the making, "Drop" is a fascinating mix of intriguing textures, dark ambience, and curious melodies.

"Drop" is the second collaboration by sound designer/composer Dwight Ashley and Tim Story, acclaimed for his elegant, enigmatic recordings for Windham Hill, Hearts of Space and others. Using the full potential of the recording studio to process and alter their arsenal of acoustic and electronic instruments, Ashley and Story create a work that is at once beautiful and disquieting.

With "Drop", the duo strives to "get the listeners to put something of themselves into the music," says Story. "We wanted to prod the listener to find his or her own feelings about a piece, even if those feelings are sometimes uncomfortable."

Story's intensely personal style as a pianist and synthesist developed from years of experimentation in his home studio and a love of composition. Along with his idiosyncratic, self-taught approach to thepiano, Story integrated into his work the new breed of electronic instruments that have been evolving since the mid-70's. His deceptively simple pieces distill harmonic and melodic ideas that are themselves quite complex.

Referred to by Story as "a true experimentalist," Dwight Ashley joined his inventive approach with Story's artfully timed lyricism to produce "A Desperate Serenity" in 1992. When speaking about his music, Ashley is very straightforward. "I make the music I make because it's what I want to hear. If other people want to hear it, that's great. But if I thought I'd be the only one who'd ever listen to it, I'd do this stuff anyway."

Enthusiastic critical reception to their first joint project "Serenity" inspired the two to further explore the expressive potential of their unique brand of music. "Drop" is the second effort from the Ashley/Story duo; their third project is slated for production in 2004.
